Mannaz: Rune of Humanity and The Self

Image shows a person walking across the horizon, overlaid with the Mannaz rune in red.

Runes, the ancient symbols used by the Germanic peoples, carry deep meanings and powerful messages. Each rune has its own story and represents different aspects of life. Mannaz, for example, is a symbol of humanity, self, and interconnectedness.

In this blog post, I’ll explore the meaning of the Mannaz rune, how it appears in rune readings, how to use it as a talisman, and some rituals involving Mannaz to harness its unifying energy. I’ll also look at which runes pair best with Mannaz for even greater benefits.

    Mannaz Rune Meaning

The twentieth rune of the Elder Futhark, Mannaz (ᛗ), resembles an “M” with crossing arms. Phonetically it corresponds to the “M” sound.

Mannaz is associated with humanity, self, and interconnectedness. This rune represents the collective human experience, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and the relationships we build with others. Mannaz symbolizes the qualities that make us human—our intellect, our emotions, and our capacity for cooperation and empathy. It encourages us to develop a deep understanding of ourselves and to foster connections with those around us.

Mannaz reminds us that we are part of a larger community and that our individual actions impact the collective whole.

    Mannaz in Rune Readings

    Upright Mannaz

When Mannaz appears upright in a rune reading, it signifies humanity, self-awareness, and interconnectedness. This rune suggests that you are in a phase of personal growth and self-discovery and that your relationships with others are playing a significant role in this process.

Mannaz encourages you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and to build meaningful connections with those around you. It signals a time to embrace your humanity and to recognize the importance of cooperation and empathy.

This rune urges you to focus on personal development and to contribute positively to your community.

    Reversed Mannaz

When Mannaz appears reversed, it serves as a warning to address issues related to self-awareness, isolation, or conflicts within relationships. This position may indicate feelings of disconnection, self-doubt, or misunderstandings with others.

Reversed Mannaz prompts you to reflect on areas where you may need to improve your self-understanding and to seek ways to resolve conflicts and build stronger connections. It advises you to focus on personal growth and to foster a sense of belonging and cooperation.

This position suggests the need for greater self-awareness and a commitment to healing and improving relationships.

    Using Mannaz as a Talisman

Mannaz can be used as a talisman to enhance self-awareness, interconnectedness, and balance. This energy can be especially helpful when placed in a space of gathering (such as the kitchen or living room, wherever you hang out in your home), or in your meditation area.

You can use any material you like to make your talisman but it’s best to choose something that is suited to the intended purpose. For jewelry, solid precious metals are best. If you’d like to tuck it into a purse or pocket, a stone would do nicely.

You can also incorporate materials that resonate with self-discovery and human connection, such as clear quartz, amethyst, or rose quartz.

Design the talisman with the Mannaz rune, either engraved or drawn, and consecrate it through a ritual to charge it with your intention. The talisman serves as a constant reminder of your ability to understand yourself and to build meaningful connections with others.

    Rituals Involving Mannaz

    Self-Awareness and Growth Ritual

To invoke Mannaz’s energy for enhancing self-awareness and personal growth, perform this ritual. Helpful when you’re feeling that your energy has been stifled or stagnant and you’d like to push into a new phase.

    What you’ll need:

    • Drawing or token of the Mannaz rune
    • Blue or Purple Candle
    • Small Mirror

Begin by lighting a blue or purple candle and placing the Mannaz rune in front of it.

Focus on your intention for self-awareness and chant: “Mannaz, guide me in understanding, let self-awareness and growth flourish.”

Place the mirror behind the candle in a way that you can look at the candle and see your face behind. Stare into the flame, allowing your reflection to fall out of focus. Imagine yourself changing and evolving, growing into the person you want to become.

Can you see who you’d like to be? What does that look like? Sit with your reflection until you feel intimately connected with yourself as you are, and how you want to be.

Let the candle burn itself out safely.

Every day, remember that vision of your future self and take whatever small steps you can to get closer to that reality.

    Building Connections Ritual

For fostering connections and enhancing interpersonal relationships, incorporate Mannaz into this ritual.

    What you’ll need:

    • Drawing or token of the Mannaz rune
    • Green or Pink Candle

Meditate on the Mannaz rune, focusing on the areas of your life where you seek to build stronger connections with others. Light a green or pink candle to symbolize empathy and cooperation, and place the Mannaz rune nearby.

Visualize a wave of unifying energy flowing from the rune into your life, enhancing your ability to connect and cooperate with others. Mannaz reminds us that we are all human, but we are all also divinely connected.

Let the candle burn itself out safely.
