Eihwaz: Rune of Wisdom and Transformation

A picture of a large yew tree in the middle of a cemetery with the Eihwaz rune in red overlaid on top.

Runes, the ancient symbols used by the Germanic peoples, carry deep meanings and powerful messages. Each rune has its own story and represents different aspects of life. For example, Eihwaz is a symbol of endurance, transformation, and wisdom.

In this blog post, I’ll explore the meaning of the Eihwaz rune, how it appears in rune readings, how to use it as a talisman, and some rituals involving Eihwaz to harness its transformative and protective power. I’ll also look at which runes pair best with Eihwaz for even greater benefits.

    Eihwaz Rune Meaning

The thirteenth rune of the Elder Futhark, Eihwaz (ᛇ), is a vertical line with branches downward from the top right and upwards from the bottom left. Phonetically it corresponds to the “E/I” sound.

Jera is associated with endurance, protection, and spiritual connection. This rune represents the yew tree, which is known for its longevity and resilience. Eihwaz symbolizes the strength to endure challenges and the wisdom needed to navigate difficult times. It encourages us to develop inner strength and to connect with our higher selves.

Eihwaz reminds us that through endurance and protection, we can achieve spiritual growth and transformation.

    Eihwaz in Rune Readings

    Upright Eihwaz

When Eihwaz appears upright in a rune reading, it suggests a period of transformation and spiritual growth. This rune suggests that you have the strength and resilience to overcome challenges and that you are protected during this difficult time. Eihwaz encourages you to trust in your inner strength and to connect with your higher self for guidance. It signals a time to focus on personal growth and to develop the endurance needed to achieve your goals. This rune urges you to remain steadfast and to trust in your ability to navigate through adversity.

    Reversed Eihwaz

Eihwaz does not traditionally have a reversed position, as its meaning inherently involves transformation. However, if Eihwaz appears in a challenging context, it may suggest feelings of vulnerability or a lack of direction. This position prompts you to reflect on areas where you may need to strengthen your resolve and to seek ways to enhance your protective measures. There might be something you need to let go in order to make space for something new. Eihwaz advises you to focus on building resilience and to trust in your ability to withstand challenges and grow spiritually.

    Using Eihwaz as a Talisman

Eihwaz can be used as a talisman to encourage transformation and spiritual connection. This energy can be useful when worn during meditation or placed on your altar.

You can use any material you like to make your talisman but it’s best to choose something that is suited to the intended purpose. For jewelry, solid precious metals are best. If you’d like to tuck it into a purse or pocket, a stone would do nicely.

You can also incorporate materials that resonate with spiritual enlightenment and transformation such as yew wood, amethyst, or clear quartz.

Design the talisman with the Eihwaz rune, either engraved or drawn, and consecrate it through a ritual to charge it with your intention. The talisman serves as a constant reminder of your ability to endure through change and to connect with your higher self for guidance and protection.

    Rituals Involving Eihwaz

    Mighty Yew Ritual

To invoke Eihwaz’s energy for enhancing endurance and strength, perform this Mighty Yew ritual. Use this practice when you know that you’re going to have a challenging season ahead.

    What you’ll need:

    • Drawing or token of the Eihwaz rune
    • Blue or Black Candle
    • Offerings that represent strength (yew wood, black tourmaline, etc.)

Begin by lighting a dark blue or black candle and placing the Eihwaz rune in front of it. Offerings such as a piece of yew wood or a small stone can be placed around the rune.

Focus on your intention for endurance and strength and chant: “Eihwaz, grant me the strength of the Yew tree, let its resilience guide my path.”

Visualize this energy as a mighty tree inside of you, growing tall, steadfast and resilient regardless of whatever is happening around it. The roots flow into the earth and the branches reach upward to the skies connecting you both to deep intuition and higher spiritual guidance.

Let the candle burn itself out safely.

Whenever you feel yourself struggling, imagine yourself as that mighty tree, your roots going deep into the ground, holding firm even against the strongest of winds.

    Protection and Guidance Ritual

For enhancing protection and spiritual guidance, incorporate Eihwaz into a ritual. If you’re feeling vulnerable or lost, this ritual can help guide you towards the right path.

    What you’ll need:

    • Drawing or token of the Eihwaz rune
    • White or Silver Candle

Meditate on the Eihwaz rune, focusing on the areas of your life where you seek greater protection and guidance. Light a white or silver candle to symbolize clarity and protection, and place the Eihwaz rune nearby.

Visualize a wave of protective energy flowing from the rune into your life, surrounding you with a protective and empowering aura.

See this energy as a soft white light, flowing over and around you. You are safe and protected in this bubble, allowing you to face any challenges with ease.

Let the candle burn itself out safely.

As you move through your day, reconnect with the protective energy around you, feeling it guiding you towards the right paths.

    1. There’s a confusing paragraph at the top with jera information. Then another paragraph titled reversed isa with no other context. If it’s meant to be here, please add more explanation.

      1. Thank you so much for pointing out that error. Since I write my posts into documents and then import them into a template, sometimes the headers don’t transfer. Despite the typos in the headers, the information in each section is correct for Eihwaz.
